MY PROCESS

Before I pick up the brush, I take a moment to quiet my mind and gather my full attention. As I write, I hold the meaning of the word and everything calligraphy has taught me over the years, letting that understanding flow into the brush rather than thinking about the shape of each stroke. This stillness and focus are the essence of shodo (書道) itself — not decoration, but a single moment of presence captured in ink. Once you place your order, I hand brush this calligraphy especially for you using traditional sumi ink (or gold ink, upon request), a bamboo brush, an ink stone, and a hand-carved seal (hanko). HOW THE DIGITAL FILE IS MADE

I begin by hand-brushing the character on traditional xuan paper, using techniques and instincts built over decades of practice. I write it many times, then select the single version with the best balance, energy, and character, and scan it at high resolution — including my red seal signature stamp. I then select one of my own original hand-painted works — a watercolor, ink wash, or acrylic piece — in whole or in part, to serve as the background, and compose it together with the calligraphy in Photoshop to create a new, modern, minimalist piece of Zen-inspired digital art. Along the bottom of the piece, I add the printed character along with its English translation, followed by a line or two of poetic, meaningful text related to the word. The result is a complete, ready-to-display piece of art — not a raw scan, but a fully composed work built from an original hand-painted background and an original hand-brushed character.
