Every name carries a story — and giving it a Japanese kanji translation turns that story into something you can actually see, hold, and hang on a wall. I’ll translate your name into Japanese kanji, either phonetically or by meaning, and select characters with beautiful meaning behind them . The result is a one-of-a-kind piece of calligraphy built entirely around you, or someone you love.

THE SCRIPT: REISHO 隷書 — CLERICAL

This piece is written in Reisho (隷書), the clerical script that took shape in the Han dynasty and is the oldest of the styles still in everyday artistic use. Its strokes are broad and level, the characters wide and squared, each one sitting with a quiet weight. Reisho reads as ancient and composed — a good fit for a name you want to feel grounded and enduring.

MY PROCESS

Before I pick up the brush, I take a moment to quiet my mind and gather my full attention. As I write, I hold the meaning of the name and everything calligraphy has taught me over the years, letting that understanding flow into the brush rather than thinking about the shape of each stroke. This stillness and focus are the essence of shodo (書道) itself — not decoration, but a single moment of presence captured in ink. Once you place your order, I hand brush your name especially for you using traditional sumi ink (or gold ink, upon request), a bamboo brush, an ink stone, and a hand-carved seal (hanko). Because every piece is written in a single moment of focus, no two are ever truly alike — the piece you receive is the only one of its kind. The photos here are mockups to show this same hand-brushed calligraphy on different paper types and sizes, so you can compare finishes and choose what fits your space before ordering.

HOW YOUR NAME IS TRANSLATED

After you place your order (or message me beforehand), send me the name you’d like translated. I’ll suggest one or two kanji options that best capture the sound and/or meaning of the name, along with what each character means, for your approval before I begin painting. For the best artistic balance, I recommend keeping it to 1–4 kanji.

HOW THE DIGITAL FILE IS MADE

I begin by hand-brushing your name on traditional xuan paper, using techniques and instincts built over decades of practice. I write it many times, then select the single version with the best balance, energy, and character, and scan it at high resolution — including my red seal signature stamp. I then select one of my own original hand-painted works — a watercolor, ink wash, or acrylic piece — in whole or in part, to serve as the background, and compose it together with your name in Photoshop to create a new, modern, minimalist piece of Zen-inspired digital art. Along the bottom of the piece, I add the printed character along with its English translation, followed by a line or two of poetic, meaningful text. The result is a complete, ready-to-display piece of art — not a raw scan, but a fully composed work built from an original hand-painted background and your original hand-brushed name.
